Application for the Karl Schroff Memorial Scholarship
The Scholarship Donor and Namesake
The scholarship is named for Karl Schroff, a broker who helped many flower bulb companies for more than 50 years to get their products into the United States. Schroff died Oct. 22, 2003 at age 81. Many people involved in the bulb trade have fond memories of Schroff. His helpfulness, personality and business sense won the heart of all who met him. Schroff was knowledgeable about the flowerbulb business and made frequent trips to Holland to visit customers and educate them about the import process. The company he built -- Karl Schroff and Associates -- was later sold to Western Overseas, Inc. Western Overseas and Mrs. Karl Schroff have donated the funds for for the Karl Schroff Scholarship.
2010 Recipient
The 2010 recipient of the Karl Schroff Scholarship was Lauren Tuski from Michigan State University.
The Award
The North American Flowerbulb Wholesalers Association is proud to offer a $1,500 scholarship in memory of Karl Schroff. The successful applicant for the Karl Schroff Scholarship will be a student in a field connected to flowerbulbs in some form.
The Requirements
The successful applicant must be a student in a field related to flowerbulbs in some form, not necessarily in horticulture, in the academic year 2012-2013. All applications must be submitted by 5 p.m. July 31, 2012 with the attached application form and a 400 to 500 word essay about flower bulbs. All entries must additionally indicate the purpose for which the applicant intends to use the scholarship, should their entry be chosen.
